Agent Smith stands out as the ultimate antagonist in *The Matrix* and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic villains in sci-fi cinema. While he appears in every movie in the franchise, the role isnβt always played by the same actor.
As the series evolves, so does Smith, maintaining his position as a central figure and nemesis to Keanu Reevesβ Thomas βNeoβ Anderson and the other Matrix escapees.
However, not every actor who takes on the role brings something new to the character. The original portrayal set such a high standard that it often inspires imitation rather than reinvention.
Agent Smith is a sentient computer program, or “Program,” within *The Matrix*, but he eventually evolves into a virus. While most characters of his kind are confined to the digital world, Smith transcends the limits of a traditional Program. Initially a loyal enforcer of the Matrix, he eventually breaks away from the other Agents and goes rogue, prioritizing his own survival. Despite this shift, his hatred for humanity remains intact, preventing him from ever becoming a true ally to Neo. This dynamic is briefly explored through an uneasy alliance in 2021’s *The Matrix Resurrections*.
